Axie Infinity is one of the largest NFT collections by sales volume, but also one of the first blockchain games. Users can collect, breed, trade, train and compete against other players with their Axies. If this sounds interesting, keep reading because we are doing an Axie Infinity NFT collection review.

This awesome blockchain game was released a couple of months after CryptoKitties. While these two blockchain games are similar, Axie Infinity has many more utility use-cases than CryptoKitties, but more about that later on.

About Axie Infinity NFT collection

What is the Axie Infinity collection about? Axie Infinity is primarily an NFT game. There are different game modes, but you can also breed your Axies and re-sell them later on.

You need to purchase three Axies to get started. Where to buy them? Well, you can buy them from the marketplace. That includes both the official Axies Infinity website and OpenSea. However, when you buy from secondary marketplaces like OpenSea, you’ll pay more in average.

Why is Axies more expensive on secondary marketplaces?

Because secondary marketplaces are where Axie resellers will try to make some money. Marketplaces on the official website are also secondary, however, the prices tend to be lower than unofficial secondary marketplaces.

So, how does Axie Infinity work?

The first step for anyone who wants to get involved is to buy an Axie. In order to do that, you need Ronin Wallet. This wallet allows you to deposit Ethereum, AXS, and generally, it allows you to hold everything related to Axie Infinity.

When you get your wallet, it’s time to get your Axie. Purchase some Ethereum from an exchange such as Binance, BitMart, Crypto.com and send it to your new wallet. Purchase 3 Axie and you can play the game.

But, how does one play this game?

You can download Mavis Hub to your PC/Android or macOS on the official website. Once you do, you’ll need to log in with your account. If you didn’t create one, log in with your Ronin wallet to Axie Infinity and create an account there.

Afterward, log in to the Mavis Hub and launch the game. You can now enjoy some of the game modes such as:

  • Adventure – Earn EXP while beating monsters
  • Arena – Fight against other players and progress in ranks

Art Style

Axie Infinity has a cartoonish style that looks very appealing. Creators have said that they were inspired by Pokémon, and you can definitely see the influence of both in-game mechanisms and the art.

Art Style also depends on what class is your Axie. There is a total of 9 different classes and each got its pros and cons. Axie Infinity classes include:

  • Aquatic
  • Beast
  • Bird
  • Bug
  • Dawn
  • Dusk
  • Mech
  • Plant
  • Reptile

Each class is superior to some and weaker than others. This is exactly the Pokémon influence we were talking about. Remember fire and water Pokémons and how the fire ones dealt less damage to water ones?

Then again, electric Pokémons are stronger against water ones. That kind of combat mechanics is also present in the Axie Infinity. However, there are fewer classes than in Pokémons.

Axie Infinity beast and dusk classes

Why are classes important?

Because you need to come up with a combat strategy against other players. Players who win combats gain experience points, SLP, and progress in ranks. You might be wondering, what’s SLP?

SLP (Smooth Love Potion) is a token used in Axie Infinity. It’s mainly used to breed Axies because breeding costs a certain amount of SLP, depending on the breed count.

For example, the first levels of breeding use only 100 SLP, while the seventh level can ask for upwards of 2,100 SLP.

You can get SLP by competing in Arena or Adventure. You can get SLP without spending energy in Adventure mode, however, you need to spend energy to get SLP in Arena mode.

Energy recharges over time and the speed of regeneration depends on how many Axies you hold. The more you have, the faster you gain energy. Every Adventure and Arena fight costs 1 energy.

About author

Axie Infinity NFT collection was made by Sky Mavis, a Vietnamese startup. Since the creation of Axie Infinity NFT game, Sky Mavis has partnered with many big names such as Samsung, HTC, and Klaytn.

This blockchain startup is slowly becoming one of the leading developers for blockchain games in Southeast Asia. In October 2021, Sky Mavis raised around $152 Million at almost a $3 billion evaluation. This funding will help Axie Infinity to grow into an even larger blockchain game.

Their website claims the team behind Axie Infinity consists of 40 full-time employees. The majority of them are developers, however, there is a wide variety of different employees. Their headquarters are in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.

Some of the team members are involved in other projects as well. For example, Trung Thanh Nguyen, the CEO, has co-founded Lozi.vn, a Vietnamese e-commerce startup. He has also been in the ACM-ICPC World finals in 2014, which is a programming contest.

Some NFT projects don’t have a long-term vision and they miss utility. this is NOT one of those projects. Instead, it has a rapidly growing base of users and a bunch of upgrades for its game.

What blockchain is Axie Infinity collection on?

Axie Infinity is on the Ethereum blockchain. However, users will be mostly using AXS (Axie Infinity Shards). AXS is actually an ERC-20 token, which means it’s a token built on the Ethereum blockchain.

What can players do with AXS?

Users can stake AXS to earn rewards. Other than that, they can use it to play different games across the Axie Infinity Universe. You might be wondering, how to buy AXS?

There are two ways to obtain AXS:

  • Get AXS by playing Axie Infinity – Playing Axie Infinity gets you AXS. Basically, it’s an in-game currency used to buy in-game stuff including Axies.
  • Purchase AXS from exchanges – You can buy it on most bigger exchanges such as Binance, Bitmart and Uniswap. When you purchase it on an exchange, you can send it to your Ronin wallet and then buy your Axie.

If you take a look at the image down below, you’ll see the usual cycle of AXS tokens. Basically, as you play and spend tokens, you get rewards that you can then stake. Yes, you can even exchange it for real money.

How to buy Axie Infinity NFT?

The first and the obvious step is to get an NFT wallet that’s supported. If you are buying directly from the Axie Infinity website, you’ll need a Ronin wallet. Otherwise, check what wallets are supported on the marketplace you are on.

  1. Create an account on Axie Infinity – When you have your Ronin wallet ready, it’s time to get an account on the official website. Simply navigate to the official marketplace and login to your wallet. After you do that, you’ll have to create an account with your e-mail and choose a password for it.
  2. Add funds to your Ronin Wallet – You can deposit funds from an exchange as we have previously mentioned. However, you can also bridge Ethereum directly from your WEB3 wallets such as MetaMask and convert them to AXS. That’s possible through the “Ronin Bridge“. Right now the fees for Ethereum might be too high, so we suggest directly sending AXS from exchange. If you don’t know which wallet to use for Ethereum, check our best NFT wallets ranking.
  3. Purchase an Axie – When funds are ready in your Ronin wallet, it’s time to purchase an Axie. You’ll need a minimum of 3 Axies to get started. Head over to the marketplace and purchase them. It might be a good idea to watch a few YouTube videos on what classes to choose for your first three Axies.
  4. Download Mavis Hub – You have purchased Axies, what’s next? Well, the next thing is to get Mavis Hub and start playing Axie Infinity. Download it from their official website and sign in with the account you have previously created.
  5. Play the game – You got everything ready, enjoy the game.

Does Axie Infinity collection have any utility?

Yes, Axie Infinity is primarily a utility NFT project. Basically, it’s a game that uses NFT to store every in-game item. Right now those are your Axies, but you can also purchase in-game land.

What do you mean by in-game land?

Axie Infinity has already started selling in-game land for their upcoming feature. Players will be able to do a bunch of different things on the land they own. Some of the things you will be able to do are:

  • Gather and craft resources – They spawn in nodes all over Lunacia (The homeland of Axies). You’ll also be able to randomly find AXS on the map. What you can do with those other resources? You can upgrade your plots.
  • Fight monsters – Monsters called Chimera will randomly attack all over Lunacia, and you’ll be able to fight them. If you manage to defeat them, they’ll drop random items including resources used to upgrade plots. You’ll be able to fight them alone or in a group.

These are the two features we currently know about the upcoming land feature. Axie Infinity says that the land gameplay is still under development. We can’t wait for future updates to see what they’ll bring us next.
